Cicloposse takes small groups on invigorating bike rides on paved back roads that cut through some of the most picturesque country in Europe.

Everyone knows Tuscany is renowned for rolling hills: because of this we provide our guests with lightweight state of-the-art road bikes, as well as the odd lift in the company van.

No one in your family is liable to forget the sheer joy of the ride, the beauty of the vineyards and farmhouses, and the delicious homemade meals in local trattorie, washed down with some of Italy's most "noble" wines!

25 miles - Medium difficulty

Depart from your accommodations and transfer by van to San Dalmazio. Although plenty of wine is produced in this part of Tuscany too, its landscape is characterized by gently sloping hills, dense cool forests and broad wheat fields. Vistas are broader on this ride, houses fewer, villages rarer. The ones we see, however, will stay in your memory the rest of your life, especially Monteriggioni, the fairy-tale hilltown atop a summit surrounded by a turreted fortification wall that looks exactly like a king's crown. Barely two hundred yards across, Monteriggioni has miraculously retained the flavor of an ancient enclave, and its residents proudly conserve that atmosphere in every way possible. We'll have lunch here.

30 miles - Medium difficulty

Depart from your accommodation, transfer by van to Pianella (this takes no more than thirty minutes, and it's basically to get us out of the city traffic!). From here we set off into the verdant green valleys of the Chianti, along winding roads that cut through the forests and lead upward into Radda. From here we follow the so-called via dei castelli to San Polo, Ama and Lecchi. You'll be surprised to see vistas are almost alpine, encompassing deep green hillsides with very few houses scattered here and there. Many of the "houses" we'll see on this route are the venerable castles that are the source of the road's unofficial nickname. Some of them are now wineries. We'll have lunch at a delightful little place in San Sano.

35 miles - Medium difficulty

Transfer by van to Castellina in Chianti. This is the best route for the serious wine lovers. It wends through the vineyards, past abandoned and renovated farmhouses on the way to one of Tuscany's most renowned castles, Brolio. This is the heart of the Ricasoli empire, family headquarters since 1067 and center of countless battles between Florence and Siena during the Middle Ages. Many people consider that the wine we now know as Chianti was born inside its hallowed cellars, which we can visit. From here we continue on to the village of Monti, then on to San Sano where we have lunch.

30 miles - Beginner level, over gently rolling with one final climb.

Depart from your accommodation. Transfer by van to Montepulciano. From here we start our pleasant five-mile descent through the vineyards, where the only sound is the wind in our hair. After a very brief climb, we pass through the town of Valiano and plunge into some of the most beautiful vineyards in Tuscany. Relaxed and glowing, it's time to set off on a long, slow climb towards Cortona, the delightful hilltown made famous by Frances Mayes in her bestselling novel Under the Tuscan Sun. After lunch at a local trattoria, we'll stroll around Cortona's pristine medieval streets and then if we're up for it, we'll sail downhill to Castiglione on the lake, rewarded by one of the most dramatic views in central Italy.

20 miles - Beginner level, over gently rolling terrain

Depart from your accommodation. Transfer by van to Montepulciano, then set out through the countryside to Pienza. We across the green pastures where many cheese factories produce pecorino, the delicious pungent cheese made using milk from the sheep we'll see grazing alongside the road. Pienza is one of the most perfect Renaissance towns in Italy. We'll take a good look around at its surprising lovely churches, palazzi e la piazza. After our visit we coast downhill to the enchanting spa town of Bagno Vignoni, a minuscule village whose ancient stone buildings cluster around a 150-by-90-foot pool of warm thermal waters. The effect is magical! We can choose to take a relaxing dip in the waters first, or head straight to lunch in a charming local tavern.

35 miles - intermediate level, over gently rolling to rolling terrain.

Depart from your accommodation. Our first stop is at the ruins of an Etruscan temple passing through a cool, silent forest. From here we'll drink in the endless panorama of the Orcia Valley, then breeze into Montichiello, a medieval hamlet surrounded by fairy-tale walls with turrets and a fortress. We'll visit the town, then head off down the hill to the Orcia riverbed. From here our route takes us past rolling hills, vineyards and pastures, straight on into Radicofani just in time for lunch. The friendly restaurant we've chosen specializes in wild mushrooms: ravioli & lasagne are two of our favorite dishes! Later we'll visit the charming town, winding up at the Fortress for a breathtaking view of the immense Amiata valley.

30 miles - intermediate level, rolling terrain with some challenging climbs.

Depart from your accommodation. Transfer by van to the delightful town of Pienza, then head west past ancient vineyards, stone farmhouses and bright green pastures. We follow a long downhill stretch to the enchanting spa town of Bagno Vignoni, a minuscule village whose ancient stone buildings cluster around a pool of warm thermal waters. Soon we start uphill and reach Castiglione d'Orcia, then push on to the monastery of Sant'Antimo, where you might catch one of several vesper services performed each day by the monks. The reward for our efforts is Montalcino, where we head straight to a wonderful wine cellar for lunch accompanied by Brunello di Montalcino. Before the day is over we'll visit the town of Montalcino, ending up at the Fortress for one long last look at the beautiful countryside.
